Mental Health Awareness Month

Updated: Jul 30, 2020

I would be remiss if Breaking Down Stigma didn't do or say something special to acknowledge Mental Health Awareness month. In honor of Flashback Friday and Mental Health Awareness month, here is something that is very near to my heart. In April 2018, I had the privilege of telling a story through dance. A story that I can relate to and have experienced.

When I thought about doing this piece, I wasn't feeling a success story. Because sometimes in the midst of dealing with a mental health diagnosis or simply battling mentally (or spiritually), we take Ls.... and that's normal.

While this dance doesn't show triumph and success, I want to conclude this month letting you all know that you CAN overcome and be triumphant over any mental, spiritual, etc. battle you experience! But here's the gag, you're not meant to do it alone. You cannot get through it by isolating yourself or shutting down. Take your Ls... struggle ... fall BUT get back up!

Find people who are willing to walk alongside you at every height and depth of your journey, whether that be friends, family, mentors or a counselor. Do what's necessary to take care of yourself. Period.

"Without community, there is no liberation." - Audre Lorde.

I'm rooting for you, always. Diamond James, MSW, LCSWA
